This is the whole kitchen. Dark espresso cabinets from the floor to the crown, wrapped around a double wall oven and the cooktop, a long island down the middle, and light walls to balance all that dark wood.

Worth noticing what did not happen here: nothing structural moved. Same layout, same footprint, same appliances. The cabinets and the paint did all of it, which is usually the cheapest route to a kitchen that feels new.

The Work

Cabinets first, paint last

The old cabinets came out and the new ones went in on the same lines, so the sink, the cooktop and the wall oven all stayed where the plumbing and gas already ran. Every box gets shimmed level and plumb, because kitchen floors and walls are almost never square, and a door hung on a crooked box never lines up right no matter how you adjust the hinge.

Then the paint. Hanging cabinets marks up walls however careful everybody is, which is why we paint a kitchen after the install and not before. The walls got a fresh coat right up to the cabinet edges and the tile, cut in by hand, so the line where dark wood meets light wall stays sharp all the way around the room.

Why the light walls matter

Dark cabinets are a commitment. They look rich in daylight and soak up light at night, and a kitchen full of them next to a dark wall color gets gloomy fast. That is why the walls here stayed light. They give back what the cabinets take, and they make the espresso look like a choice rather than a cave.

Should I paint my kitchen cabinets or replace them?

Paint them if the boxes are solid, the door style is one you still like, and the layout works. Replace them if the boxes are water-damaged or coming apart, or if you want a door style paint cannot give you. This Murfreesboro kitchen went the replacement route. Something light. Espresso or near-black cabinets swallow light, so the walls have to give it back. A warm white or a soft light neutral keeps the kitchen from feeling closed in and lets the cabinets be the thing you notice. A stark bright white can look harsh next to very dark wood.

Can you update a kitchen without changing the layout?

Usually, and it is the cheapest way to do it. Keeping the sink, gas and appliances where they already are means no walls opened and nothing rerouted. New cabinets and paint on the same footprint gets you most of the look of a remodel for a fraction of the cost.
